Vietnamese nationals became one of Japan's largest and fastest-growing foreign resident groups during the 2010s, driven primarily by the expansion of Japan's Technical Intern Training Program (TITP) and, from 2019, the Specified Skilled Worker (SSW) program. By the mid-2020s, Vietnamese nationals represented the second-largest foreign national group in Japan by registered residents, after Chinese nationals.

AMDA-IMIC's Vietnamese-language section (formerly at viet.amda-imic.com) expanded its resources significantly from around 2015 to reflect this demographic shift. Vietnamese became one of the most actively used language channels for the center's consultation services, reflecting both the community's size and the significant health information needs of technical intern trainees — a population that often arrives in Japan with limited Japanese language ability and limited prior knowledge of Japan's administrative systems.

Health Context for Vietnamese Workers

Vietnamese technical interns and specified skilled workers face a specific set of health system challenges. Many work in remote rural areas where multilingual health resources are scarce. Employer-sponsored health insurance (Shakai Hoken) is typically provided, but understanding coverage scope and claims procedures requires information that is rarely provided in Vietnamese by employers or insurers.

Worker's accident compensation (rousai hoken) is particularly relevant to this community, as manual labor in agriculture, fisheries, manufacturing, and construction carries occupational injury risks. The rousai form documentation in AMDA-IMIC's Vietnamese-language library provided workers with the information needed to understand and pursue compensation claims for work-related injuries.

Tuberculosis (TB) screening is also a specific concern for Vietnamese nationals in Japan. Japan's immigration rules and employer obligations intersect with TB prevention in ways that AMDA-IMIC documented through the TB treatment form materials, providing Vietnamese workers with reference documentation on the screening and treatment process.
