Gallbladder
胆嚢 (tannō)
The gallbladder is a small pear-shaped organ beneath the liver that stores bile produced by the liver, releasing it into the small intestine to aid fat digestion. Gallstones (胆石, tanseki) are common and can cause severe right upper abdominal pain. Surgery to remove the gallbladder (cholecystectomy) is one of the most frequently performed procedures in Japanese hospitals.
Gallbladder conditions are evaluated in the gastroenterology or surgery department in Japan.
