Surgery
手術 (shujutsu)
A medical procedure in which a physician makes incisions into the body to treat injury, disease, or structural abnormality. Surgery in Japan is performed in designated operating theatres at hospitals and is covered by health insurance under the standard copayment structure. Consent forms are required before any surgical procedure and are typically provided in Japanese, though larger hospitals with international patient departments may offer translated versions.
In Japan, inpatient surgery typically requires a hospital admission and is preceded by detailed pre-operative assessment including blood tests, ECG, and chest X-ray.
