Ultrasound
超音波検査 (chōonpa kensa)
Ultrasound imaging uses high-frequency sound waves to produce real-time images of internal organs, blood vessels, and developing fetuses. It is painless, uses no radiation, and is safe in pregnancy. Common uses include assessing abdominal organs (liver, gallbladder, kidneys), thyroid, ovaries, and monitoring fetal development during prenatal checkups.
Abdominal ultrasound is included in many comprehensive annual health checkup packages in Japan; patients may be asked to fast and have a full bladder beforehand.
