Jaundice
黄疸 (ōdan)
Jaundice is yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes caused by a buildup of bilirubin in the blood. It indicates a problem with the liver, gallbladder, or bile ducts, or excessive breakdown of red blood cells. Common causes include viral hepatitis, gallstones, alcoholic liver disease, and hemolytic anemia. Jaundice always warrants prompt medical evaluation.
Jaundice (黄疸, ōdan) in adults is evaluated urgently at internal medicine or gastroenterology departments in Japan; neonatal jaundice is managed in pediatric wards.
