Abdominal Pain

腹痛 (fukutsū)

Abdominal pain is discomfort or pain felt anywhere between the chest and groin. It ranges from mild and self-limiting (gas, indigestion) to severe and life-threatening (appendicitis, perforated ulcer, ectopic pregnancy). The location, character, and associated symptoms help guide diagnosis. Sudden severe abdominal pain is a medical emergency.

At Japanese clinics, doctors often ask patients to point to the location of pain and rate it on a scale of 0–10 (痛みの強さ, itami no tsuyosa).
