Liver
肝臓 (kanzō)
The liver is the largest internal organ, located in the upper right abdomen. It performs over 500 functions including metabolizing nutrients, detoxifying chemicals, producing bile for digestion, and synthesizing proteins. Liver function is routinely assessed in Japan's annual health checkups through blood tests measuring enzymes such as ALT and AST.
Liver conditions are evaluated in the gastroenterology (消化器科, shōkaki-ka) or internal medicine department.
