Thyroid
甲状腺 (kōjōsen)
The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland in the front of the neck that produces hormones regulating metabolism, heart rate, and body temperature. Thyroid disorders including hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism (Graves' disease), and thyroid nodules are common in Japan, particularly among women. Blood tests for thyroid function are included in many comprehensive health checkups.
Thyroid conditions are managed in internal medicine or endocrinology (内分泌科, naibunpitsu-ka) departments.
