Employee Health Insurance / Shakai Hoken

社会保険 (shakai hoken)

Employee Health Insurance (社会保険, Shakai Hoken) covers full-time employees and their eligible dependents at participating companies. Premiums are split between employer and employee and are automatically deducted from monthly salary. It generally offers lower out-of-pocket costs than National Health Insurance, bundles pension contributions, and extends dependent coverage to spouses and children who earn below a threshold.

In Japan, employees working 30 or more hours per week at qualifying companies are automatically enrolled in Shakai Hoken by their employer.
