Health Insurance Enrollment

健康保険加入 (kenkō hoken kanyū)

Health insurance enrollment (健康保険加入, kenkō hoken kanyū) is the process of registering as a member of Japan's public health insurance system. Working adults at qualifying companies are enrolled through their employer in Shakai Hoken; those without employer coverage must enroll in National Health Insurance at the municipal office. Enrollment is mandatory, and late registration can result in backdated premium payments for the entire uncovered period.

Foreign residents who delay enrolling in health insurance risk being required to pay backdated NHI premiums from the date of their address registration when they eventually sign up.
