Copayment / Patient Cost-Sharing
自己負担 (jiko futan)
The copayment (自己負担, jiko futan) is the percentage of medical costs you pay out of pocket after insurance covers the remainder. In Japan, the standard rate for working-age adults is 30% of the total bill. Children up to junior high school and elderly patients aged 70 and above pay a reduced rate of 10 to 20% depending on income. The copayment applies at clinics, hospitals, and pharmacies.
Japan's 30% standard copayment rate is the baseline figure most working-age foreigners encounter at every clinic or hospital visit.
