国民健康保険 (kokumin kenkō hoken)

National Health Insurance (国民健康保険, Kokumin Kenkō Hoken) is Japan's public health insurance plan for people not covered by employer-based insurance, including the self-employed, unemployed, students, and retirees. Enrollment is mandatory for all residents registered in Japan, including foreign nationals staying more than three months. Monthly premiums are set by each municipality based on prior-year income and household size.

Foreign residents must enroll in NHI at their local municipal office within 14 days of registering their address in Japan.
