出産育児一時金 (shussan ikuji ichiji kin)

The Birth Lump-Sum Grant (出産育児一時金, shussan ikuji ichiji kin) is a one-time payment made to insured individuals who give birth in Japan. As of 2023, the standard amount is 500,000 yen per baby. It can be applied directly toward hospital delivery costs or paid to the insured after birth. The grant is available to all enrolled insured persons, including foreign nationals, for each child born.

Foreign residents enrolled in either National Health Insurance or Shakai Hoken are eligible for the birth lump-sum grant when delivering a baby in Japan.
