Back Pain

腰痛 (yōtsū)

Back pain is pain felt in the lower, middle, or upper back. Lower back pain (腰痛, yōtsū) is one of the most common complaints in Japan and worldwide, often caused by muscle strain, herniated disc, or spinal stenosis. Most acute back pain resolves within a few weeks with rest and pain management. Persistent or severe back pain, especially with leg weakness or bladder problems, requires prompt evaluation.

Orthopedic clinics (整形外科, seikei geka) are among the most frequently visited specialty clinics in Japan for back pain complaints.
