Numbness

しびれ (shibire)

Numbness is a reduced or absent sensation in part of the body, often accompanied by tingling or 'pins and needles.' It can result from pressure on a nerve, poor circulation, diabetes (diabetic neuropathy), multiple sclerosis, or stroke. Sudden numbness or weakness on one side of the face, arm, or leg is a warning sign of stroke and requires emergency evaluation immediately.

Numbness in the hands and feet is commonly evaluated in neurology or orthopedics clinics in Japan; nerve conduction studies may be recommended.
