Nerve
神経 (shinkei)
Nerves are bundles of fibers that transmit electrical signals between the brain, spinal cord, and the rest of the body, enabling sensation, movement, and automatic bodily functions. Nerve damage (neuropathy) can cause numbness, tingling, or weakness. Sciatica — compression of the sciatic nerve — is one of the most common nerve complaints seen in Japan.
Nerve disorders are evaluated by neurologists (神経内科, shinkei naika) or orthopedic specialists in Japan.
