What it means
A qualifying health plan (QHP) is a health insurance plan that meets minimum standards established by the Affordable Care Act and is certified to be sold on the Health Insurance Marketplace. QHPs must cover the ten essential health benefits, limit annual out-of-pocket costs, comply with preexisting condition protections, and meet other ACA standards. Purchasing a QHP on the Marketplace allows eligible individuals to receive premium tax credits and cost-sharing reductions. Not all ACA-compliant plans sold off the Marketplace are QHPs. Employer-sponsored plans that meet minimum value and affordability requirements are separately considered minimum essential coverage.
