What it means
Gastric bypass is a bariatric surgery that creates a small pouch from the stomach and connects it directly to the small intestine, bypassing most of the stomach and the upper small intestine. This reduces the amount of food the body can hold and absorb, leading to significant weight loss. It is typically recommended for people with severe obesity whose health has not improved with diet and exercise. Surgery is done under general anesthesia and takes two to three hours. Hospital stay is two to three days. Long-term lifestyle changes including diet modifications and vitamin supplements are required afterward. Most patients lose 60 to 80 percent of their excess body weight over one to two years.
