What it means
GERD, or gastroesophageal reflux disease, is a chronic digestive condition where stomach acid frequently flows back into the esophagus, irritating its lining. This happens when the muscle between the esophagus and stomach, the lower esophageal sphincter, does not close properly. Symptoms include heartburn, a burning sensation in the chest, regurgitation of food or sour liquid, difficulty swallowing, and chronic cough. Lifestyle changes such as losing weight, avoiding trigger foods, eating smaller meals, and not lying down after eating can help. Medications including antacids and proton pump inhibitors reduce stomach acid. Severe or persistent GERD may require endoscopy or surgical treatment.
