What it means
Section 501(r) of the Internal Revenue Code sets rules that nonprofit hospitals must follow to keep their tax-exempt status. These rules require hospitals to create and publicize a written financial assistance policy, limit how much they can charge uninsured or underinsured patients (no more than the amounts generally billed to insured patients), and restrict aggressive debt-collection practices such as lawsuits, wage garnishment, or credit reporting before first notifying patients about financial help. If you receive a large hospital bill, ask whether the facility is a 501(r)-compliant nonprofit—you may qualify for a significant discount or free care.
