What it means

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) is a federal agency established in 2011 to protect consumers from unfair, deceptive, or abusive financial practices. For patients with medical debt, the CFPB is an important resource: it enforces the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA), which limits how debt collectors can contact you and prohibits harassment; it accepts consumer complaints against debt collectors, credit bureaus, and medical billing companies; and it has taken action to limit how medical debt can appear on credit reports. If you believe a debt collector is harassing you or a credit bureau has wrongly reported a medical debt, you can submit a complaint at consumerfinance.gov. The CFPB also publishes guides on understanding your rights with medical debt.
