Urine Culture
尿培養 (nyō baiyō)
A urine culture is a laboratory test that detects bacteria or fungi in a urine sample by placing it on a growth medium and incubating it for 24 to 48 hours. If microorganisms grow, the specific type is identified and tested against antibiotics to determine the most effective treatment. It is primarily used to confirm urinary tract infections and to guide antibiotic prescribing decisions accurately.
Urine cultures are ordered by Japanese doctors when a routine urinalysis (尿検査) suggests infection, to confirm the pathogen and select the appropriate antibiotic before prescribing.
