Stomach
胃 (i)
The stomach is a muscular sac in the upper abdomen that receives food from the esophagus, mixes it with gastric acid and enzymes, and begins digestion before passing contents to the small intestine. Japan has a high incidence of stomach cancer, and endoscopy (胃カメラ, i-kamera) is commonly recommended for screening, especially after age 40.
Stomach complaints are assessed in internal medicine or gastroenterology clinics throughout Japan.
