Intestine

(chō)

The intestines consist of the small intestine, which absorbs most nutrients, and the large intestine (colon), which absorbs water and forms stool. Together they complete digestion. The appendix is a small pouch attached to the large intestine. Bowel complaints including diarrhea and constipation are very common reasons for clinic visits in Japan.

Intestinal conditions fall under gastroenterology or internal medicine in Japanese hospitals.
