Endoscopy (Gastroscopy)
胃カメラ (i-kamera)
Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy (胃カメラ, i-kamera — literally 'stomach camera') involves passing a thin flexible camera through the mouth to visualize the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum. It is used to diagnose ulcers, gastritis, H. pylori infection, and stomach cancer. In Japan, gastroscopy is recommended from age 40 as stomach cancer screening due to high national incidence.
Endoscopy in Japan can be performed with sedation (鎮静剤, chinsei-zai) upon request; fasting from midnight before the procedure is required.
