Pancreas
膵臓 (suizō)
The pancreas is an organ located behind the stomach that has both digestive (producing enzymes) and endocrine functions (producing insulin and glucagon to regulate blood sugar). Pancreatitis (inflammation) causes severe abdominal pain, while pancreatic cancer has poor prognosis. Diabetes mellitus, caused by insulin dysfunction, is a major public health concern in Japan.
Pancreatic conditions are evaluated by gastroenterology or internal medicine departments in Japan.
