Medical Receipt
領収書 (Ryōshūsho)
An official document issued by a hospital or clinic confirming the amount paid by the patient after insurance coverage has been applied. Japanese medical receipts typically show the total billed amount, the insurance-covered portion, and the patient's copayment. These receipts are essential for filing medical expense deductions on annual tax returns (iryōhi kōjo) and for reimbursement claims with private supplemental insurers.
Keep all medical receipts for at least five years; medical expense deductions on Japanese income tax returns require receipts totaling above ¥100,000 annually.
