Lung
肺 (hai)
The lungs are a pair of spongy organs in the chest responsible for gas exchange — bringing oxygen into the bloodstream and expelling carbon dioxide. They are protected by the ribcage and lined by the pleura. Lung health is particularly relevant in Japan due to tuberculosis screening requirements for long-term residents.
Pulmonary conditions are managed by the pulmonology department (呼吸器科, kokyūki-ka) or internal medicine.
