在留カード (zairyū kādo)

The Residence Card (在留カード, zairyū kādo) is an official ID card issued by Japan's Immigration Services Agency to foreign nationals holding medium- to long-term residence status. It displays the holder's name, nationality, date of birth, address, residence status, and period of stay. The card is required when enrolling in health insurance, opening a bank account, signing a lease, and many other administrative procedures.

The residence card must be carried at all times by mid- to long-term foreign residents in Japan and presented upon request by immigration officers or police.
