Heart
心臓 (shinzō)
The heart is a muscular organ that pumps blood throughout the body via the circulatory system. It beats approximately 60–100 times per minute at rest, supplying oxygen and nutrients to tissues and removing carbon dioxide and waste. Heart disease is among the leading causes of hospitalization in Japan.
In Japan, cardiac care is typically handled by the cardiology department (循環器科, junkanki-ka) within a hospital.
