Fever

発熱 (hatsunetsu)

Fever is an elevation of body temperature above the normal range (37°C / 98.6°F), typically defined as 38°C (100.4°F) or higher. It is usually a sign that the immune system is fighting an infection. Causes range from common colds and influenza to more serious bacterial infections. Sustained high fever or fever in infants requires prompt medical attention.

In Japan, a fever of 37.5°C or above (微熱, binetsu for low-grade) is often the threshold used when advising patients to rest or seek care.
