Fatigue
倦怠感 (kentaikan)
Fatigue is persistent, overwhelming tiredness not relieved by rest. It differs from normal tiredness after exertion. Causes include anemia, thyroid dysfunction, diabetes, depression, sleep disorders, and viral illnesses such as Epstein-Barr. Chronic fatigue syndrome (慢性疲労症候群, mansei hirō shōkōgun) is a recognized diagnosis. Persistent unexplained fatigue warrants a blood test to investigate common causes.
Fatigue is a very common presenting complaint at Japanese internal medicine clinics; annual checkups often catch the underlying cause through blood tests.
