Chills

悪寒 (okan)

Chills are episodes of shivering or feeling cold, often accompanied by goosebumps and teeth chattering, even when the surrounding environment is warm. Chills frequently precede or accompany fever and are caused by the body raising its internal temperature in response to infection. They may also occur with blood infections (sepsis), malaria, or severe bacterial illness.

Chills accompanied by high fever should be reported to a clinic or hospital promptly; describe the symptom as 悪寒 (okan) to the Japanese medical staff.
