Insomnia
不眠症 (fuminshō)
Insomnia is difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking too early and being unable to return to sleep, resulting in daytime impairment. It is very common in Japan's high-pressure work culture. Causes include stress, anxiety, depression, caffeine, irregular schedules, and medical conditions. Cognitive behavioral therapy and sleep hygiene counseling are first-line treatments before medication.
Insomnia is treated in psychiatry or internal medicine departments in Japan; sleep clinics (睡眠外来, suimin gairai) are available at some hospitals.
