Fainting
失神 (shisshin)
Fainting (syncope) is a temporary loss of consciousness caused by insufficient blood flow to the brain, usually resulting in a brief blackout and rapid recovery. Common causes include standing too quickly (vasovagal syncope), dehydration, cardiac arrhythmias, or severe pain. Fainting from a cardiac cause (arrhythmia) is more serious and requires evaluation with an ECG and heart monitoring.
Unexplained fainting is evaluated by internal medicine or cardiology in Japan, with ECG being the standard initial investigation.
