Diarrhea

下痢 (geri)

Diarrhea is the passage of loose, watery stools more than three times per day. It is commonly caused by viral gastroenteritis, bacterial food poisoning, stress, or certain medications including antibiotics. Diarrhea can lead to dehydration, especially in the elderly and infants. Persistent diarrhea lasting more than two weeks, or diarrhea containing blood, should be evaluated by a physician.

Japan has rigorous food safety standards but traveler's diarrhea and norovirus outbreaks occur; oral rehydration salts (経口補水液, keikō hōsui-eki) are sold at pharmacies.
