What it means
Uterine fibroids are noncancerous growths of the uterus that often appear during childbearing years. They are the most common benign tumors in women of reproductive age. Many women with fibroids have no symptoms, but some experience heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding, pelvic pressure or pain, frequent urination, and difficulty becoming pregnant. The exact cause is unknown, but hormones and genetics play a role. Fibroids often shrink after menopause. Treatment options range from medication to manage symptoms to minimally invasive procedures or hysterectomy, depending on size, symptoms, and reproductive goals.
