What it means

Endometriosis is a disease in which tissue like the lining of the uterus grows in other places in the body. The uterus is lined with tissue called the endometrium. The patches of tissue are called implants, nodules, or lesions, and they are most often found on or under the ovaries, on the fallopian tubes, behind the uterus, on the tissues that hold the uterus in place, and on the bowels or bladder. The main symptoms are pelvic pain, which often happens during a period, and infertility. Researchers do not know what causes endometriosis. Surgery is the only way to know for sure that a person has it, and the most common surgery used to diagnose it is a laparoscopy.

Endometriosis is spelled the same in Spanish and English. The Spanish dictionary records it as a feminine noun with a medical label, formed from endometrio and the ending -osis, and MedlinePlus en español writes la endometriosis. Endometrio (endometrium) is a masculine noun that the dictionary defines as the mucous membrane lining the uterine cavity; MedlinePlus en español explains it as el tejido que recubre el interior del útero. The same page gives two words for the organ: el útero, o matriz.

MedlinePlus en español calls the patches of tissue implantes, nódulos or lesiones, and also parches de endometriosis.
