What it means
A urinary tract infection is an infection in any part of the urinary system, including the kidneys, bladder, ureters, or urethra. Most UTIs involve the bladder and urethra. They are caused by bacteria, most commonly Escherichia coli, and are significantly more common in women than men. Symptoms include a burning sensation when urinating, frequent or urgent need to urinate, cloudy or strong-smelling urine, and pelvic pain. Most uncomplicated UTIs are treated with a short course of antibiotics. Drinking plenty of water and urinating after sexual activity can help prevent recurrences. Kidney infections require more aggressive treatment.
