What it means
Kidney cancer, most commonly renal cell carcinoma, is a malignant tumor that starts in the kidneys. Early-stage kidney cancer often causes no symptoms, and many cases are discovered incidentally during imaging for other conditions. When symptoms do occur, they may include blood in the urine, back or side pain, or a palpable mass. Risk factors include smoking, obesity, high blood pressure, and family history. Treatment options include surgery (partial or radical nephrectomy), targeted therapy, immunotherapy, and sometimes radiation. Prognosis is generally better when caught early.
