What it means
A trauma team is a group of highly trained healthcare professionals assembled immediately when a seriously injured patient arrives at a trauma center or emergency department. The team typically includes a trauma surgeon, emergency physician, nurses, anesthesiologist, respiratory therapist, and other specialists as needed. They work simultaneously and rapidly to assess injuries, stabilize the patient, and determine if surgery is needed. The room and equipment are prepared before the patient arrives when pre-notification is given by paramedics. Seeing a large team in the room may feel overwhelming, but each member has a specific role. Family members are kept updated by a designated staff member.
