What it means

Vital signs are basic measurements that indicate how well the body is functioning. The standard vital signs measured in hospitals include blood pressure, heart rate (pulse), respiratory rate (breathing rate), body temperature, and oxygen saturation (how much oxygen is in the blood). Healthcare providers check vital signs frequently in the hospital, especially in the emergency room and ICU. Abnormal vital signs can signal a medical emergency and prompt immediate action. Ask your nurse what your readings mean if they seem to be concerning or if you notice staff responding urgently to your monitor.
