What it means

911 is the universal emergency telephone number in the United States, connecting callers to local police, fire, and emergency medical services (EMS/ambulance). It is available 24 hours a day, every day, from any phone including cell phones without a SIM card. Callers should provide their location, the nature of the emergency, and remain on the line until instructed to hang up. Language interpretation is available through most 911 centers. Calling 911 is appropriate for all life-threatening situations, fires, and crimes in progress.
