What it means
The telemedicine exception refers to DEA regulatory waivers allowing healthcare providers to prescribe certain controlled substances—including opioids, stimulants, and benzodiazepines—via telehealth without the in-person evaluation otherwise required by the Ryan Haight Act. Emergency waivers were first issued during the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency. The DEA has proposed making select exceptions permanent under a Special Registration framework.
