What it means
Strep throat is a bacterial infection of the throat and tonsils caused by group A Streptococcus bacteria. It is highly contagious and spreads through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Symptoms include sudden severe sore throat, pain when swallowing, fever, red and swollen tonsils sometimes with white patches or streaks of pus, swollen lymph nodes in the neck, and headache. It usually does not cause a cough. A rapid strep test or throat culture confirms the diagnosis. Treatment with antibiotics such as penicillin or amoxicillin clears the infection, prevents spread, and reduces the risk of complications such as rheumatic fever.
