What it means
Knee replacement surgery removes damaged cartilage and bone from the knee joint and replaces them with artificial components made of metal and plastic. It is performed to relieve severe knee pain and stiffness caused by arthritis or injury when other treatments such as medication and physical therapy no longer provide relief. The surgery is performed under general or regional anesthesia and takes one to two hours. A hospital stay of one to three days is typical. Physical therapy begins the day after surgery and continues for weeks to months. Most patients return to daily activities within six weeks and experience lasting pain relief and improved mobility.
