What it means
Knee pain is any ache, soreness, or discomfort in or around the knee joint. It can result from injury, overuse, or underlying conditions such as arthritis, bursitis, or tendinitis. The knee may also swell, feel stiff, or make popping sounds. Pain may be felt at the front, side, or back of the knee. Common injuries include ligament tears (such as the ACL), meniscus tears, and fractures. Rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE) help many mild cases. See a provider if the knee is very swollen, cannot bear weight, feels unstable or locked, or if the pain follows a significant injury.
