What it means
A joint injection is an outpatient procedure in which medication is injected directly into a joint space to relieve pain and inflammation. Common medications used include corticosteroids (anti-inflammatory steroids) and hyaluronic acid (a lubricating gel). Joint injections are used for arthritis, bursitis, tendinitis, and joint injuries in areas such as the knee, shoulder, hip, or ankle. The skin is cleaned and numbed with a local anesthetic before the needle is inserted. The procedure takes only a few minutes and most patients feel little more than a pinch. Relief may begin within a few days and can last weeks to months. Imaging guidance such as ultrasound or fluoroscopy is sometimes used for accuracy.
