What it means

The global period is the specific number of days around a surgery during which routine follow-up care by the operating surgeon is considered part of the original surgical fee and not billed separately. CMS defines global periods as 0 days, 10 days, or 90 days depending on the procedure. During the global period, the surgeon is expected to provide follow-up visits included in the surgical payment. If you see a new, unrelated problem during the global period, or require unexpected additional care, a separate charge may apply. Knowing your procedure's global period helps you understand which post-surgery visits should have no extra charge.
