What it means
A group health plan is health insurance offered by an employer or another organization — such as a union — to its employees or members and their eligible dependents. Group plans spread the financial risk across all enrolled members, typically making premiums lower than individual market plans. Employers usually pay a portion of the premium, and employees pay the remainder through payroll deductions. Group health plans are governed by federal laws including ERISA and the ACA. If you lose your job, you may be able to continue group coverage temporarily through COBRA. Enrollment is usually limited to specific open enrollment or qualifying life events.
